Children’s Shoes

A guide to finding the right shoes and where to buy them locally

A good shoe should match the natural shape of your foot. When checking the fit:

Length: Leave 1–1.5 cm (about a thumb’s width) between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. This gives your toes room to move.
Width: The shoe must be wide enough for the broadest part of your foot. Your foot spreads out when you stand, so always check the fit while standing with your full weight on your feet.
Depth: The toe box should be deep enough to accommodate your toes comfortably. Many shoes are only 2 cm deep, which is too shallow for a lot of people.

Walk around the shop before buying to check the shoes for fit and comfort.

Ideal Features in a Supportive Shoe

  • Midsole stiffness – The midsole (under your arch) should not bend easily.
If it’s too flexible, your foot has to work harder.
A little flexibility at the front of the shoe is helpful, especially if the sole curves upward to create a gentle rocker for your big toe.
  • Adjustability – Choose shoes with laces, straps, or Velcro so you can secure the shoe across the top of your arch. This improves fit and keeps the shoe stable on your foot.
  • Shock absorption – Look for soles with good cushioning, especially if you walk or stand for long periods.
  • Removable footbed – A removable insole allows you to insert your own orthotic, insole, or custom footbed, making the shoe more tailored to your needs.

Choosing the Right Shoe for the Right Job – Different activities require different footwear:

  • Risk of crush injury: Wear shoes with protective toecaps.
  • Risk of slipping: Choose slip?resistant soles.
  • Risk from nails or sharp objects: Use puncture?resistant soles.
  • Climbing ladders: Wear footwear that won’t slip off easily.
  • Standing for long periods: Avoid heels over 2 cm and choose shoes with good shock absorption.
